For many years, the Golden Retriever Club of Victoria held an annual Fun Day. This event was for all our members and the whole idea was to have fun with your dog!
Our very first Fun Day was held on Sunday 2nd May 1982 at Jells Park, Waverley. The day was such a success that the club decided to hold the event every year. This is the report on the first fun day that was published in the club’s newsletter.
A Really Great Day
Eighty-five Goldens and one hundred and eighty owners and their families invaded Jells Park, Waverley on Sunday 2nd May. The Fun Day provided us all with the opportunity to see Goldens of all shapes and sizes. There was great interest in the grooming and trimming section of the program and many Goldens went home sporting new haircuts, much to the delight of their owners.
"The Dog Shop" was there, packed full of goodies, and by the crowds around the tables it was obvious that owners took advantage and stocked up on their doggy needs.
The obedience demonstration attracted a large crowd, including many outsiders who watched with great interest as the dogs were put through their paces.
One of the highlights of the day, in fact it stole the show, was the Fancy Dress section. Margaret Reeves certainly had to work overtime to select first, second and third placings out of eighteen entries. The owners concerned did an excellent job on their dogs' costumes, and their efforts were greatly appreciated by all who were there.
Margaret's placings were;
Not to be outdone, Gretta Tomb's experience excelled when judging the seventy-five entries in the photograph competition. She had a hard decision to make.
Gretta's choices were;
The novelty events were also an enormous attraction, with the Sack Race and the Egg Throwing having their own special rules and hidden changes.
We finally obtained these results;
All in all, a good day was had by all and in case anyone was wondering how we had such good weather, the hot line via satellite is now closed for repair. A final word of extra special thanks to all those who helped on the day - this day would not have been possible otherwise.

Future fun days included lots of the features that had been successful at the first fun day. There were plenty of activities that everyone could join in.
And there were obedience, retrieving and tracking demonstrations, and grooming and trimming displays. We had training classes for conformation, obedience and retrieving. And there was the obligatory group photograph. One year we even held a fishing competition!
The day was all about enjoying life with your dog. And best of all we had FUN!!!
