Member’s Competitions have had a long history in our club.  The very first Member’s Competition was held not long after the club was formed on 20 August 1967 at the home of Mr & Mrs Bull in Donvale.  The Best Exhibit was Jadona Dell owned by Miss J House.

After this various locations were used.  Club member, Bill Mitchell had obtained permission for the club to use “The Elms” at Flemington Racecourse for our first Open Parade and subsequently the first Championship show in 1968.  He was able to have the permit extended to include competitions.

So for many years this delightful venue or alternatively “The Poplars”, also at Flemington Racecourse was used for our Member’s Competitions.

Member’s Competitions were a great way for new members to meet other club members with Golden Retrievers and a great social occasion for both dogs and owners.  The competition was always preceded with a handler’s instruction class where new handlers could learn what is required in the show ring and then compete in the competition.

Junior Handler’s classes for our younger members were always a feature of our Member’s Competitions.

Member’s Competitions were also accompanied by obedience competitions and instruction for many years.  Often retrieving demonstrations were held as well, where members could see experienced dogs retrieving and then have a go themselves with kowledgable handlers to offer instruction.

Member’s Competitions were often the venue for the club’s fun days.

Unfortunately at the end of 2007, due to dwindling numbers of participants, Member’s Competitions were discontinued.  The Gretta and John Tombs Encouragement Award which was awarded principally on points earned at Member’s Competitions was renamed the Gretta and John Tombs Puppy of the Year Award to be awarded at point score shows throughout the year.
