Courage was born on the 28/6/1968 out of Castiewood Castlewood by Ch Lantana Sun Storm.  Her breeding goes back to “Sundials”, “Castiewood”, “Kyvally”, “Quietwater”, “Chelsea” (NZ) and Boltby Comet (Imp UK).

Both Courage’s dam and sire were worked in the field with potential.  Courage commenced competing in retrieving trials around twelve months of age and won the Victorian Gundog Novice Retrieving Trial in 1971.  She ran in Field Trials from 1972 to1976 and was the first Golden Retriever to reach a semi-final in Australia.  At the age of five she developed a heart murmur, however closely supervised, she managed to come Runner Up in Novice and Open events six times and won two, gaining her Field Trial Champion Title against tough opposition from the Labradors at the Golden Retriever Club Open Field Trial in 1975.  Courage was the first ever Golden Retriever to obtain Field Trial Champion status in Australia.

Courage’s show career spans 1968 to 1978 between trials.  Shown six times at the Melbourne Royal she was only unplaced twice and her wins included Junior Bitch 1969 at the Golden Retriever Club of Victoria Championship show.  Courage went Best Opposite in Show under J G W Head, Limit Bitch 1970 and Veteran 1976 and 1977, being rarely unplaced at these shows.  She won the Adelaide Royal under Joe Braddon (UK).  She also won both Opposite in Group and Limit in Show awards.  Her Australian Champion Title was gained on 5/10/1972.

Courage was the first Golden in Australia to earn the title of Dual Champion and the Golden Retriever Club of Victoria awarded her a special trophy for her efforts.

Courage produced four litters, unfortunately few puppies reached the show ring.  Four puppies were exported to America and New Zealand.  Sweetwater Melody became a NZ Champion and Ch Sweetwater Spirit was a consistent winning bitch.

Courage’s legacy has been numerous descendants who are successful trialling and obedience dogs.

Courage died in 1979 aged 10 years and 9 months.
