Every few years a Golden Retriever National Specialty Championship Show is held around Australia hosted by a Golden Retriever Club which is a member of the National Golden Retriever Council.

The inaugural National Specialty was held in Adelaide, South Australia in 1996.

A National Speciality is a multiple day event incorporating seminars as well as a conformation show and specialty classes and working events such as an obedience trial or working test.  Exhibitors travel to a National event from all over Australia.

The Golden Retriever Club of Vic Inc has hosted two National Specialty Championship Shows: the Third Golden Retriever National Championship show held at Cranbourne Racecourse, Victoria on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November 2000 and the Ninth Golden Retriever National Championship show held at held at KCC Park, Skye, Victoria on Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th, and Friday 31st October 2014.

The next National Speciality Show will be held in 2020 hosted by The Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc. The 11th National Show will be held on 24, 25 & 26 August 2020 at the Hawkesbury Showgrounds, Racecourse Rd, Clarendon NSW.
